Ceramic art from South Africa

Innocence - ceramic by Richard Bollers
After these many years it is still surprising how a little postcard can make an impression on you. I don't know that much about South Africa. This card shows a ceramic work by an artist who lives and works there. Richard Bollers addresses "everyday issues affecting the urban poor" so a website of an art initiative tells us about him. There was an information text on the artist on the card too, it was good to get to know more.

The card was sent by Jaco and Johanet who told me a bit about their weekend and I liked that they enjoyed the same things on weekends as I do - although living more than 9000 km away.

Torn

This card sent from South Africa took a little bit longer to get here, 76 days. It arrived in a plastic envelope and was accompanied by a letter of German Mail Services appologizing for its bad condition. Apparently it got stuck and torn in the sorting machine. Luckily the postcrossing code was still readable.

Robben Island

Robben Island is a small island just opposite Capetown, South Africa. It was used as a prison island and Nelson Mandela spent 20 years of his life in a small cell there. Since the 1990s the prison is transformed into a museum and the island can be visited as national and nature monument.
In postcrossing terms it is a quite unusual card. In more than 1200 received card there are only three  from South Africa. And two of them arrived within two days. This one was sent by Janet.
