Washington Irving - The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a Gothic story first published in 1820. It is a classic that remains popular throughout the ages and also a very short read. It tells the story of Ichabod Crane, a teacher in a very small village called Tarry Town, who is in love with a farmer's daughter. He fails in his attempt to win her hand and on his way home at night he meets the Headless Horseman. The following day his horse has returned home but Ichabold Crane is never seen again...
I didn't particularly like the story but it sure was interesting to read the source for the apparently endless list of adaptations in literature, film, on stage or in music. It's also one more item done on my popsugar reading challenge 2018.
